A first win for the Hammers, Manchester City create three point lead at the top and a stalemate in the North London Derby – here’s a recap of the last set of fixtures as club football returns after the international break.

Gameweek 9 delivered the usual amount of drama and talking points in the WSL, with two derby showdowns, big wins at either end of the table, and the battle heating up for Europe.

The Headlines
  • Manchester City put three past their neighbours at the Etihad

  • Olsson’s swift counter halts Chelsea

  • A first win for West Ham with London City Lionesses and Brighton & Hove Albion also picking up wins

  • Tottenham and Arsenal settle for a point in the derby

Bragging rights for those in Blue

A quite dominant first half performance from Andrée Jeglertz’s Manchester City, as goals from Knaak, Shaw and a thunderous effort from Hemp put the home side in control at half-time, and would see out the second half to take all the points.

Chelsea settle for back-to-back draws

The three points for Manchester City proved even more valuable, as Olsson’s goal cancelled out Thompson’s early opener for Chelsea, with Sonia Bompastor’s side unable to find the winner meaning they sit in second, three points behind the Citizens.

Lift off for the Hammers

After just one draw and seven defeats for Rehanne Skinner’s West Ham, they showed no signs of frailties as they took a 3-0 lead before the hour with goals from Denton, Tysiak and Martinez. The Toffees pulled one back through Snoeijs, but it would turn out to only be a late consolation.

Wins for London City & Brighton

A quick-fire double in the second half from London City’s Goodwin & Kumagai put Jocelyn Prêcheur’s side in control over Aston Villa, and only three points off the European places. Elsewhere, the Seagulls ended their four game run without a win, as they put four past the Foxes courtesy of Haley, Mpome, Olislagers & Seike.

All evens in North London

Tottenham and Arsenal were made to settle for a point a piece, a result that leaves both sides in mid-table. Despite a host of chances for Arsenal, Tottenham also had their moments to threaten, but neither side were able to capitalise and left to rue.

What this means

Heading into Gameweek 10, Manchester City sit top spot with a three point lead over current Champions Chelsea.

Manchester United round off the Champions League spots, with North London sides, Arsenal and Tottenham, just one point behind – with London City Lionesses in close proxity sitting two points off third spot.

At the other end of the table, Liverpool occupy bottom with two adrift of West Ham in 11th, but with a game in hand over the East Londoners. Everton and Leicester City, will also be hopeful for wins this weekend, to create some distance between themselves and the bottom two.
