A tale of two keepers in the Play-Off
Irish goalkeepers Katie Keane and Sophie Whitehouse are used to battling it out for the Girls in Green’s no.1 jersey, but on Saturday they go head to head in their biggest match of the season in The Play-Off Presented by Mercedes.
On Saturday, among the litany of fascinating storylines in the inaugural BWSL promotion/relegation play off is the intriguing tale of two Irish goalkeepers.
Charlton’s Sophie Whitehouse and Leicester City’s Katie Keane have had vastly different routes to their club’s season defining encounter. Their paths to the national team and club success have been equally as varied. While Whitehouse grew up in East Africa and came through the college system in the US, Keane played her club football in Ireland and impressed in the Irish underage groups before making the move across the Irish sea.
Whitehouse began the BWSL 2 season as Charlton – the title favourites’ – undisputed no.1 goal keeper. In 2024-25, she won the Save of the Season in the BWSL 2, and this year the shot stopper was nominated three times for the award. This term the Charlton custodian kept more clean sheets (eight) than any other goalkeeper in the BWSL 2. She was also proficient in the air, leading the division for the most high claims in the box. Whitehouse ended the season with a save percentage of 70.8 per cent, the second highest in the division.
Charlton will have to bounce back after failing to get the point they need to secure promotion on the final day against Birmingham. Whitehouse will look to head coach Karen Hills’ ‘Charlton Principles’, which comprise of ‘hard working people who aren’t going to stop’. The Addicks will need that resolve now more than ever. Hills has been an admirer of Whitehouse for a long time coaching her at Spurs before bringing her along to the Valley.
Among the others Whitehouse has shared a changing room with is Hannah Hampton, the Lionesses number one, widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in world football. Having played together at Birmingham City, Hampton took the time this week to praise Whitehouse at the BWSL awards, “she [Whitehouse] was always pushing herself to reach high standards at the Blues” lauded Hampton. “I’m sure she will make a lot more worldie saves to make sure Charlton get to the BWSL and we’ll be competing with each other next season.”
Katie Keane’s involvement in this crucial encounter is far more unexpected than that of her opposite number. Up until April, Keane had been consigned to a role on the bench, deputising for Janina Leitzig and Olivia Clark. The Dubliner shone on a seven-day loan spell with Sheffield United earlier this term, saving two penalties in a Subway Women’s League Cup shoot out against Durham that earned the Blades a bonus point.
Katie Keane made her league debut for Leicester City away at the Emirates to Arsenal with her side 4-0 down at half time. Keane came on for the injured Clark and made an instant impact. Astonishingly, Keane made nine saves in 45 minutes with four of those coming from inside the box. Her performance afforded Rick Passmor reason to smile in his post match press conference despite the result confirming bottom place in the BWSL, describing Keane as a ‘throwback’ with an ‘incredible mentality’.
Her home league debut wasn’t any easier, with Chelsea the visitors to the King Power that day with Sam Kerr and Lauren James in attack. Keane once again made six saves, four from inside the box to keep the score line respectable. This season no goalkeeper in the BWSL made more saves per 90 minutes than Katie Keane who averaged 6.40 per match. She also ranked in the top five of goalkeepers for goals prevented per 90 with 0.3.
Leicester’s no.16 was one of the youngest players to make their League of Ireland debut. And for good reason, only a year later she was named the League of Ireland Young Player of the Year in 2024 as she helped Athlone Town to their first-ever league title. That same summer she was selected in the squad to travel to Lithuania for the Under 19s European Championships where Dave Connell’s Ireland side opened their campaign against reigning champions Spain. Keane faced 15 shots on target but incredibly, kept a clean sheet as Ireland clung on for an historic point.
The Leicester City shot stopper has made Ireland senior squads since but was omitted from the most recent squad announced today. Sophie Whitehouse was selected for the camp for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Netherlands and France. Yet still, head coach Carla Ward was clear, ‘Katie [Keane] has a long future with this national team’. While the pair are likely to be teammates in many a national team camp in the future, on Saturday they will face off in an historic match, the first ever promotion/relegation play off in BWSL history.
