British Gas Save of the Month December award winners confirmed
The winners of the British Gas Save of the Month awards for December have now been confirmed across both the Barclays Women’s Super League (BWSL) and Barclays Women’s Super League 2 (BWSL2), with two outstanding goalkeeping moments taking top honours.
In the Barclays WSL, London City Lionesses goalkeeper Elene Lete has been crowned British Gas December Save of the Month following her superb penalty stop against Brighton & Hove Albion.
After a bright and energetic start from the Seagulls, Lete played a crucial role in keeping her side in the contest. Showing outstanding reactions and sharp reflexes, she got down quickly to her left to divert the spot kick around the post and behind for a corner.
While impressive saves from Courtney Brosnan (Everton), Janina Leitzig (Leicester City) and Faye Kirby (Liverpool) were also shortlisted, it was Lete’s penalty heroics that ultimately captured the most votes from supporters.
In the Barclays WSL2, the December award went to Crystal Palace’s Shae Yanez for her stunning intervention against Birmingham City.
A powerful strike from distance looked destined for the roof of the net, but Yanez produced a perfectly timed, strong-handed save to tip the ball over the crossbar. The moment preserved the Eagles’ clean sheet in their 3-0 victory over the Blues and underlined her influence at the back.
Her save finished top of the vote, beating fellow nominees Natalie Negri (Ipswich Town), Fran Bentley (Bristol City) and Grace Moloney (Sunderland) to claim the award.
