A milestone match, Man City extend epic run plus we have a winner in Leg 1 of the Fantasy season as the BWSL hits pause for the international break

1,500 BWSL games

Manchester City’s 4-2 win over Arsenal was the 1,500th game in BWSL history, since the competition began in 2011 as the successor to the old Women’s Premier League National Division.

It was fitting, really, that this milestone match featured two clubs who have won five BWSL titles between them – including the reigning champions, Man City.

In similarly fitting fashion, Arsenal were also involved in the very first BWSL fixture: a 1-0 win at Chelsea, with Gilly Flaherty notching the decisive goal.

560 days since Man City last lost at home in the BWSL

With that victory against Arsenal, Man City extended their home unbeaten run in the BWSL to 16 games.

They haven’t lost in the competition at either the Joie Stadium or Etihad Stadium – where Sunday’s clash took place – since March 23 last year, when Erin Cuthbert’s stoppage-time goal sealed a dramatic comeback win for Chelsea.

City drew with Everton in their next home league match after that – but, forebodingly for anyone who travels to face them, they’ve won the last 15.

5.99 xG for London City Lionesses

Alexia Putellas and Kadidiatou Diana both bagged braces as London City Lionesses delivered an attacking masterclass to thump Tottenham Hotspur 6-1 on the road, making it five straight wins in all competitions and staying three points off early BWSL pace-setters Man City.

The Lionesses racked up the goals almost exactly in line with their Expected Goals output, too, accumulating a whopping 5.99 xG – the most by any team in a BWSL game this season – with 5.14 of that total coming from open play.

Meanwhile, Spurs have now experienced resounding away victories from both perspectives – having recorded the biggest such success of the BWSL campaign so far when they triumphed 7-0 at Crystal Palace in Matchweek 3.

7 players averaging a goal per 90 or more

Seven players across the BWSL and BWSL2 are scoring at a rate of 1.00 goals per 90 or better in 2026/27 – and six of them were on the scoresheet this weekend.

Of the seven, Spurs’ Victoria Pelova comfortably boasts the highest average of 1.57 goals per 90, finding the net five times in 286 minutes (a goal every 57.2 minutes).

None of the seven has scored in every league game this term, though both Pelova and Newcastle United’s Martha Thomas are on three-match league scoring streaks.

93.8% save success for Anna Tamminen

No BWSL or BWSL2 goalkeeper has kept out a higher proportion of the shots they’ve faced this term than Newcastle’s Anna Tamminen.

Tamminen kept her fourth clean sheet in five games as Newcastle maintained their perfect start by cruising to a 3-0 win away to local rivals Durham.

The Finland international has conceded a solitary goal in 2026/27, against Sheffield United in Matchweek 3.

Fantasy in numbers: Leg 1 | Matchweek 5

Standout individual

Birmingham City’s Oceane Hurtre is now the leading points scorer in Fantasy, move to 53 this weekend.

Hurtre is one of two players to pass the 50-point mark, with fellow midfielder Lauren Hemp sitting just behind her on 52 after scoring twice for Man City against Arsenal.

Hemp also boasts the highest points average of any player to feature in at least two Matchweeks (13).

Leg winner

Leg 1 of the Fantasy season is now complete, and we have a winner: OnaBattleAfterAnothr, managed by Samo Bobnar.

The first team to 500 points, finishing Leg 1 with 502 to their name, OnaBattleAfterAnothr lead the Barclays Season Race heading into Matchweek 6 (the start of Leg 2).

This weekend, for the third time in the opening five BWSL Matchweeks, they hit the 100-point mark (they cleared it in Matchweeks 1 and 3), benefitting chiefly from having picked Hemp (19 points), and London City Lionesses duo Danielle van de Donk and Alexia Putellas (both 16 points).
