A tough night for Bristol City in the Subway Players' Cup at Charlton Athletic had a silver lining, as head coach Charlotte Healy handed debuts to two players in a 2-0 defeat.
Meanwhile, Everton supporters finally got a glimpse of a summer signing as the Toffees continued their excellent home form with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United.
Bristol City
Ella Smith
Smith was introduced during the second half, gaining her first senior minutes for the club in a competitive match.
Bristol City were beaten 2-0 at The Valley, with Charlton scoring twice late in the game. Neeve McDonald, making just her second start for the club, was sent off in the 56th minute with the scores level at 0-0.
Despite the disappointing result, Smith's introduction represented a significant personal milestone and an opportunity to make her case for more regular minutes.
In the Barclays Women's Super League 2, the Robins have gradually started to build momentum after an inconsistent start. Squad depth will be key in their promotion push, and Smith will be delighted to have had the chance to make her case to Healy.
Chloe Giddings
Giddings was also introduced in the second half, with Healy seemingly keen to inject some youthful exuberance into the City XI after the break.
It was a tough assignment for Giddings, who was brought on with just 14 minutes remaining, a minute after Emily van Egmond had given the Addicks the lead.
Giddings has been pushing for a first-team appearance for some time and was included in the matchday squad last season for the 3-0 FA Cup defeat to Arsenal, although she remained an unused substitute.
An England youth international, the 18-year-old forward has impressed in City's youth setup and shown an eye for goal at academy level. She will be hoping for more opportunities, potentially in more favourable circumstances, to showcase her talent in the final third before the end of the season.
Everton
Jutta Rantala
Jutta Rantala arrived at Everton this summer as part of a significant attacking restructure for the Toffees.
The 26-year-old moved after three seasons at Leicester City, where she made 48 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals. Before that, she played for Swedish side Vittsjö GIK.
Rantala's game is built around her attacking movement and ability to contribute across the forward line. She won the Foxes Player of the Year in the 2023-24 campaign, but the seasons following have been punctured by persistent injury problems.
After making the matchday squad for the first time over the weekend in the narrow defeat to London City Lionesses, the Finland international started Wednesday's match. Everton eventually overcame BWSL2 leaders Newcastle United thanks to two late goals from Ornella Vignola.
Rantala helped the Blues maintain their excellent start to the season at Goodison Park. They have won their last five home matches in all competitions and return to the Old Lady on Sunday, when Aston Villa visit in the BWSL.
