Chelsea’s Departing Legend: Sam Kerr’s Sensational Blues Legacy

The Opta Analyst analyses a legend's impact
Chelsea will say goodbye to a club legend when they wrap up their BWSL season against Manchester United on Saturday, with Sam Kerr departing at the end of her contract.
Announcing her impending exit on Thursday, Kerr said: "When I reflect on my Chelsea career and doing it for the last time, I just feel happy that it happened, and I feel so grateful to have played for this club for six years and won as many trophies as we could."
And it is fair to say Kerr has had a seismic impact upon the BWSL since arriving at Chelsea in January 2020.
Kerr joined the Blues as the all-time leading scorer in two divisions on two different continents – Australia's A-League and the United States' National Women's Soccer League. She was just 26 at the time.
She has since been overhauled by Michelle Heyman in her native Australia but – for now – retains her stateside record. And the forward has also etched her name into the record books in England, becoming Chelsea's most prolific player in BWSL history.
During the Blues' 3-1 victory at Leicester City – which saw them confirm Champions League qualification – Kerr scored her 64th BWSL goal, surpassing Fran Kirby to go top of the club's goal charts in the competition.
Kerr's future always appeared uncertain as the end of the season drew closer, as she was one of several household names from the BWSL coming towards the end of their contracts.
And now, with her departure confirmed, she will surely draw interest from far and wide, with recent reports suggesting multiple teams want to take her back to the NWSL.
Ahead of Kerr's Chelsea swansong against Man Utd on matchday 22, we dive into the best Opta insights surrounding her Chelsea legacy.
Only Rivalled by Shaw: Kerr's Goalscoring Prowess
Since Kerr made her Chelsea debut on 5 January 2020, only Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw has outscored her in the BWSL.
It is perhaps fitting, then, that the Jamaican – who has netted 81 times in 92 appearances for Manchester City in the competition, and is out of contract herself at the end of the campaign – has been touted as a potential replacement for Kerr at Stamford Bridge.
Behind Shaw and Kerr, Vivianne Miedema and Alessia Russo are joint-third for goals in that timeframe (57 each), with Beth England rounding out the top five with 56.
It should also be noted that Kerr has never scored a penalty in the BWSL, so when spot-kicks are excluded, she inches slightly closer to Shaw's non-penalty haul of 78.
Kerr's 64 goals in 92 BWSL outings are almost twice as many as the next-most prolific Chelsea player in that time, with Guro Reiten netting 35 times.
And since Kerr’s arrival in the BWSL, she has averaged a goal every 96 minutes in the competition.
Only Shaw has averaged fewer minutes per goal (84), and that duo are a long way clear of their closest competitors, with no other player averaging fewer than 121 mins per goal in that time (Miedema).
And, when we dig into the underlying data, the sheer quality of Kerr's finishing becomes clear.
Kerr has outperformed her expected goals (xG) figure of 50.8 by +13.2, with Shaw also the only player to better her in that category, with an xG overperformance of +17.8.
Shaw is also the only player to score more headed goals (31 to 22) or goals from inside the area (77 to 61) than Kerr, marking that duo out as the BWSL's undisputed top goal poachers.
But it should also be acknowledged that Kerr has taken 110 shots fewer than Shaw in that timeframe (299 to 409) and hit the target with a greater proportion of her efforts (55.7% to Shaw's 53.5%).
In addition, the Australian's conversion rate of 21.4% is the best of any player to score more than 40 goals since she arrived in England.
BWSL Records in the Bank
Chelsea won the BWSL title in each of Kerr's first five seasons at the club, only falling short this campaign – when she has been restricted to four starts after recovering from the anterior cruciate ligament injury that caused her to miss half of 2023-24 and the entirety of 2024-25.
Had Kerr not been out for such a lengthy stint because of that injury, she would have backed herself to put up truly frightening numbers.
With three FA Cups and three League Cups also in the bag, Kerr has won 11 major trophies with Chelsea.
She and the Blues fell agonisingly short of European glory when reaching the Champions League final in 2021, with Emma Hayes’ team going down 4-0 to Barcelona in Gothenburg.
And throughout her stint in the BWSL, Kerr has taken ownership of several competition records.
Kerr became the first player to plunder 20+ goals in back-to-back BWSL campaigns, doing so in her first two full seasons in 2020-21 (21) and 2021-22 (20).
She netted once in only four games in 2019-20, 12 times in 2022-23, four times in 2023-24 and has six goals, so far, in 2025-26.
One regret for the 32-year-old might be that she never took ownership of the BWSL single-season goal record (held jointly by Miedema in 2017-18 and Rachel Daly in 2022-23, both 22), but in 2020-21, she netted the most goals by anyone in their debut season.
Kerr's 23 BWSL goals in 2021 remain the most by any player in a calendar year, and, alongside Miedema and England, she is one of just three players to score against every single team she has faced in the competition.
Kerr's Creative Output
But Kerr's game is about more than just the plethora of goals she has scored.
Since she joined Chelsea, she is one of only two players, alongside Miedema, to register at least 50 goals and at least 20 assists in the BWSL – both Kerr and the Netherlands international have teed up 22 goals for team-mates in that span.
Kerr has created 136 chances in the BWSL, all but two of which have come from open play.
Among all players to play at least 50 BWSL games since Kerr's arrival, her average of 1.97 open-play chances created per 90 mins ranks sixth in the league. It is the second-best figure by any Chelsea player in that time (after Kirby's 2.5) and the best by any player to also boast 50+ goals.
Simply put, no player in the recent history of the BWSL has combined ruthlessness in front of goal with the ability to create for team-mates to the same level as Kerr.
One Last Hurrah
If Kerr were to select an opponent for her final game with Chelsea, there is a good chance she might have picked Manchester United.
That is because she has scored more WSL goals against the Red Devils (seven) than any other player.
United are Kerr's joint-second favourite opponents overall, only netting more often against Aston Villa (eight) and also scoring seven times each against West Ham United and Everton.
Should she find the net at Stamford Bridge this weekend, Kerr will become the seventh player to score in 50+ different BWSL matches and the third non-British player to do so, after Miedema (67) and Shaw (51).
And, of course, there is still something for Chelsea to play for. They may have fallen disappointingly short in the title race, but the Blues could still salvage a second-placed finish with a victory – though they will also need Arsenal to drop points at Liverpool, after the Gunners edged out Everton 1-0 on Wednesday.
Chelsea have only finished outside the top two once in the last 12 BWSL seasons, so there is pride at stake for Sonia Bompastor's team.
Regardless of the result, Chelsea will end this season with their lowest points tally in a completed, 12-team BWSL season, though they could equal their best winning run of the campaign, coming off three straight victories.
Bompastor's side have scored at least three times in each victory, and Chelsea have not netted more than twice in four straight BWSL matches since February 2024, towards the end of Hayes' reign.
And there is another record the Blues will want to protect – they are the only team United have never beaten in the BWSL, going unbeaten in all 12 meetings between them (W10 D2).
A second-placed finish would also, of course, bring automatic qualification to the UWCL league phase for 2026-27, so Kerr and Chelsea will try to do their part on Saturday.
But the game will also be one last chance for Chelsea – and the entire BWSL – to celebrate a true legend.
