The north-west derby opens the weekend, with both sides arriving off the back of wins and a fixture that has never produced a goalless draw.

Gameweek 5 of the Barclays WSL begins with the only fixture of Saturday, as Manchester United host Liverpool at the Progress with Unity Stadium.

Both sides arrive in good spirits. United finally got their first win of the campaign at West Ham last weekend, while Liverpool saw off Everton in the Merseyside derby.

United chasing back-to-back wins

Eva Olid's side will be targeting consecutive victories for the first time this season, having taken time to find their rhythm.

Andrea Medina has been central to the recent improvement. Operating from the left, she scored in last weekend's win and proved pivotal in United's chance creation, continuing an all-action start to the season that has made her one of the division's standout performers in both boxes.

The wider question for Olid is whether the attacking players around Medina can rediscover their edge. United have scored sparingly so far, and converting the chances she creates is what turns a first win into a run.

Liverpool's summer signings settling fast

Gareth Taylor can be satisfied with two wins, a draw and a defeat from the opening four games, a considerable improvement on this stage last season.

Much of that is down to recruitment. Vivien Endemann has made an immediate impression since arriving in the summer, contributing goals and assists while involving herself in almost everything Liverpool do going forward.

Natalia Ramos has been a bright spark in midfield. She attempted six shots last weekend, the most by any Liverpool player in a BWSL game this season, and has given Taylor another route to goal from deep.

The head-to-head

Recent history favours United, who won both league meetings last season. Liverpool took the fixture before that.

One thing is close to guaranteed, though: these sides have never played out a goalless draw in the BWSL. Whatever else this one produces, goals have tended to follow.
