McCabe swaps red for blue

Defender and Republic of Ireland international Katie McCabe has joined Chelsea after spending 11 years at Arsenal
Katie McCabe is more used to relishing the battle against players in blue shirts rather than playing alongside them, but that’s about to change next season after she was unveiled as Chelsea’s latest signing, the Ireland skipper joining the west Londoners having left the Gunners after a remarkable 11 years.
McCabe swaps red for blue after joining on a free transfer ahead of the expiration of her Arsenal contract on 1 July, a club with whom she won the Champions League in 2025, among other trophies, in a successful spell.
The 30 year old rejected the chance to stay in north London and instead has signed a three-year contract with Sonia Bompastor’s side, with the further option of a fourth year.
“I've spent more time with this group of girls than I have with my own family over the last ten years,” she told Arsenal’s official website after revealing she was leaving the club. “It's going to be an emotional one, but it's time to step away and start a new chapter now.”
That new chapter, as it turns out, will take place across London at one of Arsenal’s biggest rivals.
McCabe grew up as a Chelsea fan alongside her brother, and was a huge fan of winger Damien Duff. Now, with Chelsea set to play all their home games at Stamford Bridge from the 2026-27 season, she’ll get to play on the pitch on which she watched her favourite stars play, and attempt to return the side to the top of the BWSL.
“I’m so looking forward to walking out at Stamford Bridge as a home player, being around the fanbase and competing for trophies on all fronts,” said McCabe.
“This club has been successful for so many years. I want to keep pushing and driving that, and for me, it’s about bringing that success back to Chelsea.
“Having had talks with Sonia and the club, I really got to grips with their ambitions, how they want to drive it and the direction they want to go in.”
Left-back McCabe had an impressive 2025-26 campaign and was named in the BWSL team of the season.
She leaves Arsenal having won the FIFA Champions Cup, Adobe Women’s FA Cup, BWSL title and three Subway League Cups. In total, she made 305 appearances and scored 36 goals.
However, it was the desire for more silverware that, she says, prompted the switch.
“At this point in my career, I’m ready for a new start, a new challenge, and a new chapter,” she told the Chelsea website. “Having had talks with Sonia and the club, I really got to grips with their ambitions, how they want to drive it and the direction they want to go in. That's something I'm really passionate about. Having played against Chelsea for so long, I know their ambitions and their winning mentality. I'm still ready for that at this point in my career, and I feel I can give a lot to the club and the fans. I'm so excited to get going.
“I like to drive standards on and off the pitch,” she continued. “I like to get around the younger players and really try to get the best out of them and understand them. I've thoroughly enjoyed working so hard throughout my career.
“That's what I really relate to going into a club like Chelsea: the passion that all the players have for the club and their ambition to drive it forward. That's something I want to be a part of as well.”
While it may take the rest of us some getting used to seeing McCabe in Chelsea blue rather than Arsenal red next season, one thing won’t change, her determination to succeed. In that respect, McCabe and her new club seem well matched.
