The proven benefits of the Loan System

New kid on the block Lucy Newell recently made her debut for Crystal Palace following a January move on loan.
Stepping in to replace an injured Jamie-Lee Napier, Newell played a full 90 minutes against Ipswich Town.
During the game, she made the most passes and earned a clean sheet for her efforts, and certainly showcased what she has to offer.
Following full-time, in an interview with Palace TV, she said: “I've waited a long time for this and I was really glad that my opportunity came today.
"It was a big win from the girls and a clean sheet - so, I'm happy!"
Midlands to Manchester
Throughout the early stages of her career though she has been working hard and picking up skills which can only help her in the future.
The young defender first burst onto the scene when she was playing in the FA Women’s National League for West Bromwich Albion.
She joined the Baggies when she was nine years old and made her senior debut aged 16 years old.
While at the club, she was making an impression both on and off the pitch, and in 2018 held a cake sale which raised over £300 for a local Age UK charity.
Continuing to leave a lasting impression on the Midlands outfit, she won the Players’ Player of the Season and Young Player of the season awards in 2023.
As a result of her success, she joined Manchester United’s academy shortly after, then on her 18th birthday she signed her first professional contract.
More recently, she joined WSL2 side Blackburn Rovers in the 2024-25 season. Once again, she was exceeding expectations and saw herself on the shortlist for the Rising Star award.
Known for her good communication and composure on the ball, the central defender joined Birmingham City on loan at the start of the 2025-26 season where she played four games before returning to her parent club in January.
Shortly after returning to Man United, she signed for Crystal Palace until the end of the 2025-26 campaign.
Eagles ambition
In her first interview with the club, she said: “I'm really excited to be here. Crystal Palace is a massive club with huge ambitions and I'm just excited to be a part of them now."
Outside of club competitions, she made her debut for England in December 2021, and has been utilising the pathway through the WU16, WU17, WU19 and WU20 age groups.
She was part of the Young Lionesses squad at the 2025 U19 European Championships who managed to qualify for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
She’s certainly demonstrated what she has to offer thus far and, with a long career on the horizon, will look to continue to leave her mark on, and off, the field.
