The Subway Players Cup continued to churn out storylines in Week 2 of the 2026-27 competition. In addition to some pulsating action and stellar individual displays, there were some new faces for fans to get acclimatised to on Wednesday night.
A total of 15 players made their first senior appearances or their first outings for their new clubs in the opening set of fixtures. Here are the eight who had special moments to savour this week.
Aston Villa 3-1 Newcastle United
Newcastle United
Kayla Rendell, Abbie Richardson, Casi Gregson
A tough night for Newcastle in the Midlands was made more palatable by the fact that head coach Tanya Oxtoby handed debuts to three players.
England youth international Rendell got her first start for the Magpies, and she was kept busy between the sticks as Villa dominated for long spells. Although she impressed, Rendell may find it tough to oust Anna Tamminen from the starting role for Barclays Women’s Super League 2 fixtures, with Newcastle top of the league after conceding just one goal in their first four games.
Meanwhile, Richardson and Gregson were given their first senior appearances off the bench, having shone for the club’s youth setup before impressing in first-team training.
Richardson came on for the final three minutes of the game and said afterwards that it was a special moment for both her and her young team-mate.
“It was unreal for my mam and dad to be here and get to see me come on,” said the 18-year-old. “I got to speak to them after the game too, which was really nice to see how buzzing they were.
“I was over the moon for Casi as well because we’ve both worked so hard, and I think we both deserved this opportunity.”
Durham 1-5 Manchester United
Manchester United
Lucy Newell
Manchester United made eight changes to the XI that beat West Ham United in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday.
As a result, Newell would have been hopeful of making her maiden appearance for the club, especially against a Durham outfit that is rooted to the bottom of the BWSL2 after four games of the season.
With United cruising to victory, Newell was introduced in the 75th minute, finally making her first senior appearance for the Red Devils after agreeing professional terms with the club in 2024 on her 18th birthday. She had earlier been part of the club’s academy setup and won the Women’s Academy Players’ Player of the Year award in 2023-24.
Newell has had three loan spells since – at Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City and Crystal Palace – and has done a steady job for all three teams in defence when given the chance.
The 20-year-old faces plenty of competition to break into the United senior team on a regular basis, but she will at least be content that she has had a chance to make her case to Eva Olid.
West Ham United 3-1 Southampton
West Ham
Niamh Peacock, Sienna Wareing, Sude Oztas
A positive night for West Ham United was further enhanced by the sight of a trio of 18-year-olds making their first appearances for the club.
“I’m very happy for Niamh, Sienna and Sude,” West Ham head coach Rita Guarino said after the game. “They’re three young players, so it’s very important that after many training sessions, they had the opportunity to play – and they played well.”
Peacock and Wareing were both given their chance to impress from the start, while Oztas came off the bench with 13 minutes remaining.
England youth international Peacock was steady at the base of the side. After stints with Arsenal, Watford and Portsmouth earlier in her career, the centre-back signed a three-year deal with West Ham in the summer and seemingly has all the tools required to become a fine defender.
Wareing signed professional terms with West Ham in the summer too after being let go by Manchester United, where she had previously spent seven years. Like Peacock, she has also represented England up to Under-20 level.
Oztas has already shown what she can do for West Ham at youth level, scoring on her first appearance for the Under-21s against Charlton in August.
She has clearly made an impact since arriving from Chelsea this year and has been promoted to the club’s first-team squad for training. Oztas is eligible to represent England, Nigeria and Turkey at international level; she has represented Turkey up to Under-19 level so far.
“I’m so pleased for Sude,” Guarino said of the forward. “She’s a talented player. She deserved a goal, but I’m very happy with the way she came into the game.”
Ipswich Town 0-1 London City Lionesses
Ipswich Town
Jenna Slattery
Despite falling to a last-gasp loss against London City on Wednesday night, Ipswich have plenty of positives to take from their start to the season.
Two wins and two draws have them in fourth place in BWSL2 after four games. Head coach David Wright finally gave supporters a look at summer signing Slattery, too.
The midfielder arrived to some excitement, having played a crucial role for Hearts in their title-winning 2025-26 season. Slattery was consistently the team’s driving force from midfield and also contributed plenty in the final third; she registered nine goals and eight assists in 27 league appearances.
Transitioning to the English game will be a challenge and, barring one effort from long range against London City, she struggled to get into the game against the BWSL outfit. But Ipswich’s strong start to the season means she can be eased into her new surroundings and should play a bigger part as the campaign goes on.
