The Fantasy Scout picks out the best captain picks for Matchweek 5

With Matchweek 4 done and dusted, it’s time to turn our attention to Matchweek 5 in both the Barclays Women’s Super League and the BWSL2.

Both tables are starting to take shape following the opening weeks of the respective seasons as we look ahead to the action before the first international break of the campaign.

And with that, we’ve picked out five Fantasy captain options to help you win big in the weekend’s BWSL and BWSL2 action.

Victoria Pelova - £6.5m vs London City Lionesses

Just one point separates Tottenham Hotspur and London City Lionesses heading into Matchweek 5. The capital pair claimed all the spoils last time out, securing key wins over Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion, respectively.

Spurs alone have scored 11 goals in their last two games, with midfielder Victoria Pelova playing a key role in both. Indeed, the Dutch star has marked her first two league starts of the season with four goals and one assist.

Pelova has now claimed 38 points in Fantasy this season, and selected by just 8% of users, the 27-year-old could prove a handy differential captain option this weekend.

Ellie Carpenter - £7m vs West Ham United

Chelsea sit just two points off league leaders and defending champions Manchester City following their 1-0 win over rivals Arsenal last weekend. The result not only kept the Blues on the coattails of City, the victory saw Chelsea claimed a third successive BWSL clean sheet.

Sonia Bompastor’s side boast the best defence in the league having conceded just one goal in their opening four matches, and that in itself was an own goal. And you, too, can capitalise on their resolute backline on Fantasy.

Ellie Carpenter is one of the highest scoring players in the game so far this season, and she’ll be confident of adding to her 41 Fantasy points when Chelsea makes the trip to West Ham United on Sunday. The 10th-placed Hammers have scored just four goals in 2026/27, and are expected to struggle to break down this solid Blues backline.

Martha Thomas - £5m vs Durham

Newcastle United lead the BWSL2 having won all four matches so far this season. And the Magpies have been imperious in the opening weeks of the campaign, scoring 11 times and conceding just once.

And while Martha Thomas took a little while to get going, she’s showcased her talent in the last two Matchweeks. Thomas struck twice and bagged an assist in a 4-1 win over Sheffield United. She followed that up with a brace in a 4-0 victory against Leicester City.

Next up for Newcastle is a trip to table footers Durham, who sit bottom of the BWSL2 with zero points and 13 goals conceded. Thomas and co. will look to put up a big score at their rivals on Sunday and for just £5m, the Scot could prove a fine captaincy pick for the weekend.

Amber Hughes - £5m vs Watford

Wolverhampton have made an indifferent start to the BWSL2 campaign, picking up six points from the opening four games. However, they should be confident about heading into the international break on a high when they welcome Watford to the SEAH Stadium on Sunday.

Watford are winless in the BWSL2 this season and have picked up just two points from their four games. They boast the second worst defensive record having conceded nine times, a return Amber Hughes will be looking to boost next time out.

Having struck in the 3-1 loss to Ipswich Town last weekend, Hughes has now scored in three successive league games, and has one assist to her name for good measure. Selected by just 2% of Fantasy users, the Wolves forward may just prove a solid captain pick for Matchweek 5.

Alex Greenwood - £6m vs Arsenal

While it’s always tempting to plump for Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw or Lauren Hemp when captaining Manchester City players, we’re backing giving the armband to defender Alex Greenwood for Matchweek 5.

City welcome Arsenal for Sunday’s marquee clash in the final BWSL game ahead of the international break. And they are taking on the Gunners at the right time. Mired in mid-table, Arsenal have struck just two goals this season. Only Charlton Athletic (1) have bagged fewer.

Conversely, only Chelsea (1) have conceded fewer goals than Arsenal (2). They can keep teams out, that goes without saying, which is why we’re opting against Shaw and Hemp and opting for Greenwood instead.
