West Ham forward Viviane Asseyi produced a stunning volley to bring the Hammers level against high-flying London City Lionesses.

In a tough matchup against London City Lionesses, Viviane Asseyi continued her fine start to the season, scoring her fourth goal of the season to make it 1-1. Her equaliser arrived in extraordinary fashion too, after she connected from a deep cross from Yu Endo. Having found space at the back post, the French forward struck it perfectly on the volley into the roof of the net beyond former Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester United goalkeeper Mary Earps for a genuine goal of the season contender.

While a lot of the focus will be on the finish, Asseyi’s movement is very important. She does really well to create an overload at the back post. Using Eva Nyström’s run to drag Jana Fernandez inside, Asseyi found herself alone at the back post. That being said, the angle is very tight and Asseyi does very well to strike high but keeping the shot on target.

West Ham manager Rita Guarino was full of praise for the star striker after the game, highlighting the quality she shows often in training.

“The quality of Vivi (Asseyi) is something special, and also in training, sometimes she tried to do this kind of volley shot, in this game (it) was brilliant to see her score this kind of goal, it is not easy you know!”

Despite Asseyi’s outstanding equaliser, West Ham were unable to take anything from the game, with Isobel Goodwin restoring London City’s lead late in the first half. Asseyi played 62 minutes, scoring the Hammers’ only goal while recording one key pass out of eight accurate passes, winning two fouls and four ground duels.

Although West Ham did not get the win, Asseyi’s strike was a moment of real quality. Already at four goals this season, the forward is showing her importance to the Hammers’ attack and priced at £8 million, it is no surprise she is owned by 10% of BWSL Fantasy players. Her latest finish also earned her a Subway Black Card, securing free Subway for a whole year.

West Ham face Charlton in another London derby in the next round of the Subway Players Cup, as they sit third in the Southern Group.
