Bompastor's defence is laying the foundations for a ninth BWSL title

In past seasons, Chelsea have shown they can win games with their sheer attacking quality. This season, however, is a little different. The Blues are still scoring freely but it's what happens at the other end of the pitch that could determine whether Sonia Bompastor's side reclaim the Barclays Women's Super League title.

As we head into the international break, Chelsea top the defensive charts with the first block of games complete.

The Blues have conceded just one goal in their five BWSL encounters this campaign. The goal came in their opening-day clash against Aston Villa when Hannah Hampton was unable to keep out Veerle Buurman's unfortunate own goal.

Chelsea top the clean sheet rankings

We're now five games into the 2026/27 BWSL campaign and Chelsea's four clean sheets is the best  defensive record in the division.

Only Manchester City, who have won all five of their matches, sit above the west London club in the standings. However the reigning Champions have conceded six goals this campaign, as have Arsenal. London City Lionesses - who sit below Chelsea, have let in five.

Therefore, not only do Chelsea possess the lowest total in the league, but they have a significant defensive advantage over other title contenders.
