Is Wilms the complete modern defender?

Blending defensive intelligence and attacking creativity, Lynn Wilms is setting the standard in the BWSL
25-year-old Dutch international has excelled in her role as full-back, but it’s her ability to combine defensive solidity with attacking quality that has enabled her to redefine what it means to be a modern defender in the BWSL.
Since joining Villa in the summer, where Wilms quickly became part of the team’s defensive structure, she has played over 1,300 minutes for the Birmingham-based club. Her flexibility and reliability have been an important part of Villa’s campaign, supporting the club’s attack with a remarkable seven assists so far.
Not surprisingly, she was nominated for the Player of the Month award for March.
Operating primarily as a right-back, Wilms likes to push forwards, overlapping attacking players and delivering dangerous crosses into the box. Her creativity from the back allows Villa to move up the pitch and threaten with pace.
Wilms’ vision and technical ability allow her to link defence and attack seamlessly, allowing Villa to flourish in wide areas.
Yet despite her strong attacking style, she remains a solid and commanding presence in the defence.
She reads the game exceptionally well, anticipating her opponents passes to stop potential threats in the box. Moreover, her composed and calm demeanour makes her a trustworthy and consistent presence.
Wilms’ flexibility when dealing with attacking threats, whether quick wingers or physical forwards, makes her a valuable asset in Natalia Arroyo’s team.
Another key aspect to her game is her versatility. Although primarily used at right-back, Wilms is also comfortable playing in the centre. This flexibility provides Villa with tactical options and easy adaptions during matches without losing defensive quality.
Wilms’ impressive form this season has been built on a strong foundation. She began her career in the Netherlands at FC Twente, where she quickly established herself as a regular starter. Competing in the Eredivise, she won two titles, gaining early experience of a pressurised and competitive environment.
At 20 years old, she earned a move to European giants VfL Wolfsburg.
With Wolfsburg, Wilms went on to compete in both the Frauen-Bundesliga and the UEFA Women’s Champions league, playing against some of Europe’s strongest teams.
Her stint in Germany was impressive, claiming the Frauen-Bundesliga title alongside three domestic cups. She also reached the Champions League final competing against Barcelona and narrowly missing out on the coveted trophy.
At international level, Wilms is a consistent presence for the Netherlands, earning over 60 caps at only 25.
Her experience in major tournaments has undoubtedly developed her leadership skills, composure and decision-making, qualities that have been visible in her league performances.
With an average match rating of 7.3, she is among the more reliable performers in her position. As well as this, her eight clean sheets and seven assists make her one of the most well-rounded defenders currently in the BWSL.
Ultimately, what sets Wilms apart from her defensive counterparts is her ability to influence every phase of the game. Modern football demands full backs to perform defensive duties as well as support the attack, and Wilms has certainly been able to flourish.
Her stamina permits her to contribute consistently across the 90 minutes, whether its whipping in dangerous crosses at one end or putting in last-ditch tackles at the other.
As Aston Villa continue their campaign aiming to stabalise their mid-table position in the league, her performances will be crucial to their success for the rest of the season.
If she continues at this level, Wilms will quickly establish herself among the very best in her position across Europe. Her experience, masterful technical ability and intelligence on the ball suggest she’s not only keeping up with the demands of the modern game, but actively setting the standard.
