Leaving her mark on the Barclays WSL2, can she make the step to Arsenal?

Arsenal striker Jess Gale has enjoyed a brilliant breakout season thanks to two loan spells, at Portsmouth and Bristol City. Now, she’s eyeing a spot in the Arsenal side in 2026-27.

Born in Sevenoaks, Kent, Jessie Gale spent her youth career at Charlton Athletic before signing for Arsenal two years ago.

She made a name for herself when she signed a dual registration with Arsenal’s U21s and Watford FC who were competing in the Women’s National League. That year, Gale helped Arsenal win the FIFA Youth Cup in Zurich in May 2024 and the PGA League Under-21 Division title at the end of 2024-25.

This season, she’s had a breakout campaign at senior level, enjoying two successful loan spells after signing her first professional contract last summer.

The forward has just completed her best season yet thanks to two loans, one at Portsmouth and another at Bristol City. In and amongst her club evolution, Gale also made her WU23’s debut back in March at 19 years old.

You get the feeling this is just the beginning for the young star…

South-coast wins

Jessie enjoyed her first taste of WSL 2 football at Portsmouth when she joined on loan at the start of the season. Under Jay Sadler, Gale became an integral part of the squad, netting five goals in 15 appearances for the Blues.

Throughout her time at Portsmouth, Jessie competed in the Subway League Cup in Group C as well as the WSL 2.

“My loan spell with Portsmouth at the start of the season was incredibly successful and fruitful,” Gale told Arsenal.com. “The girls were great, the staff were great and I really enjoyed my time there.

“It was a very different challenge to the one at Bristol City, because we were up against relegation. It was good to experience that because we were fighting for something every single week, and when we did cause an upset against a big team there was something to celebrate. Playing in the WSL2 is definitely a step up from academy and tier three football. The physicality is a big part of that, of course, but it’s the mental side too.”

Across to the West she goes

After the Christmas break, Gale had a few clubs clamouring for her signature, but it was Charlotte Healy at Bristol City that won the battle.

“We’re delighted to bring Jessie into Bristol City for the second half of the season,” said Healy. “She has shown her quality in WSL2 throughout the first half of the season and we know she’s someone who can add quality to our group. She’s a young, talented player who is lightning quick and can cause real problems for teams, so she’s another really exciting addition for us.”

Gale went on to have the best month of her career so far in January whilst with the Robins. Under Healy’s management, she netted three goals, was awarded Bristol’s Player of the Month and earned a nomination for the PFA Young Player of the Month.

Her debut goal for City, against Nottingham Forest, saw her win the Goal of the Month award, and later was voted the club’s Champagne Moment of the Year.

Jessie’s most recent goal for Bristol was a 98th-minute winner against Newcastle United, helping Bristol City cement fourth place in the table.

What next?

Now the season in the WSL 2 has come to a close, Jessie Gale can look back on 22 appearances comprising of eight starts, totalling 1,121 minutes.

She also has nine goal involvements and found herself as one of the top scorers in the league.

Throughout the last year, many senior players in North London have praised Gale and her talents – especially the likes of Chloe Kelly and Alessia Russo who have taken Jessie under their wing. Kelly described Gale as “the future of the club”, and she now looks ready to return to Arsenal to fight for a place in the matchday squad and be a contender for the Gunners starting XI each week.
