Barclays Women’s Super League and Barclays Women’s Super League 2 managers will no doubt be scouring the player list for differentials, and those who may go under the radar. At 7.0m, Godfrey has the potential for both - particularly because many will opt for London City Lionesses teammate Alexia Putellas, who is considerably more expensive at 8.5m.
What Makes Godfrey a Good Pick?
Firstly, it’s impossible to ignore the impact Godfrey had last season, where she racked up 97 Fantasy points.
The 21-year-old bagged six goals and four assists in 21 appearances during the club’s debut campaign. She produced a goal contribution every 121 minutes, every one-and-a-half games, with a great chance that now improves after a summer of investment for the Bromley-based side.
The addition of Putellas, Kadidiatou Diani and others should elevate the team’s attacking potential, meaning Godfrey now has the chance to shine in an elite frontline.
Her classification as a midfielder only helps matters. Godfrey’s versatility is a huge asset, and is a viable route to goal for the team wherever she plays, as we saw throughout last season. Her two-footed ability means every one-on-one situation has the potential to produce a strike on goal, or cross, with both cumulatively rewarded in the Fantasy scoring system.
Godfrey also is capable of scoring great goals–such as cutting inside from the right and curling in with her left–or laying them on for her colleagues. Nikita Parris was a benefactor of her ability to land the ball right on the keeper last year, with Godfrey’s crossing just needing a tap home to result in a goal. The thought of Putellas timing her runs into the box to get on the end of such a ball could even mark the pair as worth doubling up on.
That interchange will be important to monitor in the early weeks. Godfrey is an intelligent runner into the box and scored goals by pressuring the goalkeeper with her size last season, meaning it’s entirely likely Putellas lays plenty of chances on for her, too. The forwards will rotate positions under manager Eder Maestre, whose freeflowing style means each will have an opportunity to get on the ball and make an impact.
Putellas, in many ways, feels the ideal person for Godfrey to learn from when it comes to maximising her decisiveness in matches. With an excellent season behind her, the young English star will now have her sights set on pushing towards a senior England spot; an objective that should only yield substantial Fantasy points.
