Burnley add experienced defender to their ranks

Deanna Cooper has swapped the northeast for the northwest in signing for Burnley Women ahead of the new Barclays Women’s Super League 2 season.

The defender has agreed a two-year contract following her departure from Newcastle United in June, with Burnley having the option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.

“I’m very excited, and I was over the moon when I got the message to say that Burnley were interested,” she explained.

“I’ve got a winning mindset, which I think has taken me a long way in my career at all the clubs I’ve been at.

“Burnley have had a really good precedent in winning the league last season, so hopefully I can add to that.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting the fans, and hopefully we can put on a show for you. I’ll give my all for the Club, and I hope you see that.”

Born and raised in Kent, Cooper’s footballing education came at Gillingham, Brighton & Hove Albion and London Bees.

A talented sportswoman, she simultaneously played cricket for her county and represented England at academy level.

Cooper earned her first professional contract upon signing for Chelsea in 2017 and later moved to Reading, where she made 52 appearances in the top division of the English pyramid.

The last two years of her career have been spent in the black and white stripes of Newcastle United, and the centre-back featured in the majority of their BWSL2 matches last season.

A goal against local rivals Sunderland ensured she endeared herself to the near 19,000-strong crowd at St James’ Park in November 2025.

Cooper now turns her attention to Burnley and is the second new face to be added to the Clarets squad, following the arrival of Scottish attacking midfielder Christie Harrison-Murray.
