Wolves Women have completed the signing of former Liverpool defender Jasmine Matthews, their first addition of the summer as preparations begin for their debut season in professional football.
The Cornwall-born defender joins on a two-year deal following her departure from Burnley earlier this month, bolstering Dan McNamara's defensive options ahead of the new campaign and bringing with her a reputation for consistency, leadership and defensive reliability at the highest level of the women's game.
Matthews began her career with Bristol City and has gone on to make over 150 appearances in the Women's Super League. She has also featured in the UEFA Women's Champions League with both the Robins and Liverpool, where she enjoyed two spells and helped them win promotion from the Championship in 2022.
A former England youth international, Matthews represented her country at under-17, under-19 and under-23 level.
Speaking on the new recruit, McNamara said: “After the very first game we played against Burnley last season, it was evident to us how much quality Jas possesses and she is someone we earmarked if we were to make the step up.
“She has had an amazing career and we are delighted to bring her here. We know she still has a lot to give and will bring us that experience of knowing what the demands are of professional football. We want to add players that will enhance our environment, not just with their standards, but with their abilities as well.
“Jas has got all the ingredients to be a real good leader in what will be a really exciting first season in WSL 2. It is so exciting for us as staff to be talking about a player of this calibre joining Wolves. To have her come back into WSL, this time with Wolves, is huge and she has really bought into the project. She will come in, raise our standards and impose herself on our talented group – and I am pretty confident she will soon become a fan favourite.”
Welcome to Wolves, Jas!
