Goalkeeper joins the Blades from Rugby Borough

Sheffield United Women have swooped to add a goalkeeper with international experience to their ranks as Wales shot-stopper Poppy Soper joins from Rugby Borough on an initial one-year deal with an option of a further year through to 2028.

The 24-year-old was called up to her country’s Euro 2025 squad last summer before injury ruled her out of the tournament, going on to join the FA Women’s National League side on her return.

Born in Newport, Soper played for Cardiff City before joining Plymouth Argyle and subsequently a brief stint at Chelsea as the Blues won the domestic double.

The goalkeeper took her first steps into the second tier at Charlton Athletic between 2022 and 2024 before joining Blackburn Rovers where she played for a year up until last summer.

Soper was a regular between the sticks for Rugby Borough as her side finished third in the FA WNL North last season, and she is looking forward to returning to Barclays Women’s Super League 2 with the Blades this season.

“It's been a great first week. I've settled in really well and everyone's been really welcoming and lovely, and I'm just excited to keep pushing on now."

Head coach Stephen Healy added, “We're really pleased to bring Poppy into the club. We wanted someone to come in who already has experience in this league but also has the capacity to both grow and challenge within our goalkeeper union.

"Poppy has also worked with Sian in the past so there's a solid, established working relationship there which is important, and we're looking forward to seeing how she develops over her time with us."
