A new look London City, how will they go?

The overview

Last season: 6th (BWSL)

This season expectations: Challenge for UWCL places

What a summer it’s been for London City Lionesses. Following a strong sixth place finish last season and backed by some serious ambition, Head Coach Eder Maestre has welcomed no end of new faces through the door as London City have assembled one of the most star-studded squads in the country to propel towards the Champions League spots.

Where to start with London City? Arguably, the most exciting addition to London City has to be Alexia Putellas. The 32-year-old joins from Barcelona and instantly becomes one of the best players in the league. The four-time Champions League winner offers goals and creativity from midfield but doesn’t shy away from defensive responsibility either. Alongside her, Kadi Diani joins from Lyon, bringing her speed and direct running out wide, while Mapi León shores up the defence and Mary Earps arrives in goal adding more talent to a squad that already had plenty.

Freya Godrey was a revelation last season; she contributed six goals and four assists to London City’s first campaign in the BWSL. We have to mention Delphine Cascarino who could be pure box-office; she’s an electric winger who likes to run at her opponents for fun. Not forgetting Nikita Parris who is a proven goalscorer at this level and Lucía Corrales who made the left back spot her own, contributing 3.58 crosses and 3.92 dribbles per 90.

Set-piece takers

Corners: This is where it gets interesting for LCL, Corrales and Cascarino took the majority last season but it’s entirely possible Mapi León or Kadi Diani could assume responsibilities.

Penalties: Kosovare Asllani has typically taken them but since she will miss most of the season as she recovers from injury, it’s likely that Alexia Putellas will be on penalties.

Direct free kicks: Again, a difficult one to call. Most likely, Alexia, Mapi León or potentially Grace Geyoro.

Player costs

London City are loaded so choose your players carefully. Alexia Putellas (£8.5m) is the marquee pick, a world-class midfielder who could win you a gameweek on her own. Freya Godfrey and Kadi Diani are exciting two very options at £7.0m who will provide plenty of goals, assists and attacking involvement.

Don’t overlook the backline either. With Mapi León (£6.0m) now marshalling the defence and Mary Earps (£5.5m) between the sticks, clean sheet points are a very real prospect. Additionally, Daniëlle van de Donk (£4.5m) could be one to look out for, after an injury hit first season, the Dutch midfielder will be keen to get back to her creative best in the middle of the park.
