Position: Defender
Price: £5.0m
With Barclays WSL and WSL2 Fantasy launching this month, now is the time to be thinking about which players will be making an appearance in your squads. Here is why Bristol City’s summer signing Brooke Aspin might be the perfect pick for your first Fantasy Barclays Women’s Super League 2 teamsheet.
Back to Bristol
The 21-year-old center-back signed a permanent contract with Bristol City in July this year, but she is certainly no stranger to The Robins. At the age of 14, Brooke Aspin joined the club’s academy and went on to make her senior debut with Bristol City at the age of 16. In 2023, the centre-back temporarily departed the club, signing a contract with eight-time Barclays Women’s Super League champions Chelsea. Aspin was then loaned back to Bristol City for their 2023-2024 season in the BWSL, in which she played a crucial role within the squad and made a total of 17 league appearances. Brooke Aspin has proven herself capable of putting in quality performances during critical games, notably scoring the third goal in Bristol City’s 2-3 victory over West Ham - the club’s first BWSL win of the season. Having historically been an integral part of the team, a return to Bristol could result in ample minutes and goal scoring opportunities for the centre-back and therefore plenty of points for your Fantasy BWSL2 squad.
ACL Rehab with Chelsea
Having unfortunately ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament during an England under-23 fixture against Norway in November 2024, Aspin has had little game time over the past season and a half. However, having spent her rehabilitation period with Chelsea, the 21 year-old is accustomed to training with and learning from some of the biggest names in the BWSL. If Aspin is able to make an imminent return to the pitch, her move back to Bristol City’s familiar environment is the perfect opportunity for her to pick up valuable minutes and become a regular starter in the Barclays Women’s Super League 2.
Gaps in Bristol City's Defence
Bristol City have announced a number of departures from their squad during the summer transfer window, including that of defenders Mari Ward and Harley Bennett, the former having signed with BWSL club Liverpool and the latter with FA Women’s National League South side Fulham. Brooke Aspin therefore provides a valuable and much needed addition to The Robins’ back line, and therefore may be the perfect player for your fantasy team due to her opportunity to pick up minutes from the get-go.
Looking Ahead...
Bristol City’s BWSL2 2026-2027 season kicks off on Sunday the 6th of September with an away fixture against Sunderland. The club has an impressive track record against the northern side, winning their six most recent clashes. Could Brooke Aspin make an appearance in the BWSL2 opening week for what may be Bristol City’s first win of the season?
A lack of recent minutes in the BWSL and BWSL2 may make the centre-back a risky choice for your Fantasy BWSL2 team. However, at a price of £5.0m, future star Brooke Aspin is a wise selection as she makes her return to the pitch with a familiar club in which she has previously been a steadfast presence by scoring goals in important fixtures. Her summer move to Bristol City also makes the centre-back a savvy choice for Fantasy managers, with a lower chance of a mid-season transfer impacting your squad selection.
