Sunderland announce former Saints goalkeeper

Sunderland AFC Women is delighted to announce the signing of goalkeeper Fran Stenson.

The 25-year-old arrives on Wearside from Southampton FC following two impressive seasons for the Hampshire side, where she made 47 appearances in all competitions and established herself as one of the Barclays Women's Super League 2's top goalkeepers.

Stenson was recognised by her teammates for her performances during the 2024-25 campaign, receiving Southampton's Players' Player of the Season award after an outstanding debut season on the south coast.

An England youth international, Stenson began her career with Birmingham City before securing a move to Manchester City in 2018. She has since gained valuable experience across the top two tiers enjoying spells with Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers, Brighton & Hove Albion, Birmingham City and Sheffield United before joining Southampton in 2024.

Now making the move to Sunderland, Stenson adds further quality and experience to the Black Cats' squad ahead of the new campaign.

Speaking on her move, Stenson said: “It feels amazing, and it's definitely an exciting time to be here, and I can't wait to get started.

“The ambition of the club is massive, and after my first conversation with Mel, I knew where I wanted to be. It’s a really exciting time to be part of it.

“I started my football career quite young, and I feel at 25, I bring a lot of confidence from positive experiences I've gained in the past, which I hope to bring to this team. I can't wait to meet the fans, and we’ll do everything we can to put on a good show.”

SAFC Women Head Coach, Mel Reay, added: ““Fran is a fantastic addition for Sunderland. She's calm, commanding and composed between the posts, with the attributes needed to make big saves when they matter most. Her shot-stopping, presence and professionalism make her an exciting addition to the squad, and we're confident she'll be a real asset to the group. Fran has huge potential, and we're looking forward to helping her continue her development and seeing her grow into one of the standout goalkeepers in the game."
